Self Reliant Again?
I came across an old archive film based in 1968 published on YouTube during 2015, the documentary displays the living of Lampeter, my home town based in mid Wales. It explains the changes in industry at the time. Comparing the footage to today the town has been through rapid changes of traditional businesses closing down and new roads being built. My initial response to the film is to compare and find out exactly what has stayed, developed or completely vanished; I also want to look at the possibilities of re-inventing the town as it is now and take it back to the era of being self reliant. What if Lampeter was considered as an empire? Built within four walls? Or blocked from society?
With a University, museum and the local community I can discover and unfold new primary research that will help me re-invent the town and maybe re-establish the town to have a positive future. Although I aim to design for the town and people within I want to reflect on the effect of myself moving to London and identify if I have a future back home. From the method and process sessions I can structure my research by engaging with local shop keepers, trade owners and farmers that have lived in the area all their life and collect a series of answers that will drive my project to develop further.
